A small group of friends founded Friends of International TB Relief in 2012 in Germany and dedicated themselves to the fight against TB. This commitment has taken many forms around the world, from hosting educational events in Germany to providing technical assistance in India to direct implementation in Viet Nam.

FIT now has established offices in Viet Nam where the majority of our TB service delivery activities are carried out.

We work in close partnership with Viet Nam’s National TB Control Programme, local government authorities and partner organizations focused on bringing quality TB prevention and care to people in need and creating sustainable programs to improve access to health services.

The early years

Piloting TB Services in Viet Nam

After making a commitment to support TB services in Go Vap district, FIT’s founding member and CEO, Luan Vo, received funding from friends and family to support TB counsellors in one ward of the district. With backing from the association in Germany, several key donors and the Ho Chi Minh City Public Health Association, the PROPER CARE project was launched.

This pilot program aimed to provide quality TB care to the urban migrant community. Over the next three years, support for the Go Vap District Department of Health grew from one ward to three, until finally services covered the entire district. The project resulted in an increase in the number of people treated for TB by 17% and reduced loss to follow-up during treatment by over 95%.

Expansion of TB Services

in Viet Nam

Following the strong results in Go Vap, FIT’s team grew exponentially in 2017. We expanded community-based TB case finding activities from one to eight districts of Ho Chi Minh City, registered as an international NGO in Viet Nam, hired over 20 staff and began to support over 150 community healthcare workers. We also scaled-up private sector engagement in Ho Chi Minh City.

In 2018 we grew our operations to four districts of Hai Phong (North Viet Nam), the city of Hoi An (Central Viet Nam) and two districts of Can Tho (Southern Viet Nam).

During this period, we were able to implement the comprehensive Search-Treat-Prevent approach, by integrating latent TB infection testing into our routine activities. In 2019, our office in Ha Noi launched TB case finding operations to Ha Noi (North Viet Nam). In addition to the active TB case finding, treatment & social support, and latent TB infection testing and treatment, we are actively involved in conducting and disseminating high quality research on TB services and care.
